Sudbury
Student
Residence
The design of the student residence in downtown Sudbury incorporates building integrated agriculture in order to establish a local food source within a northern city. The main concept focused on the accessibility of healthy food for students versus fast food by providing easy access to healthy food options, improving students health and well being.
The design mimics a plant's production as the roofs harvest rainwater feeding into the drip irrigation vertical hydroponics which produces the food. Rooms were designed to promote social connectivity with large common rooms and study areas. The building encourages the production of food even in the middle of winter, increasing food security in the area.
