Inhabitable
Wall:
PLaYWood
This project was part of a studio charrette where we created an inhabitable wall. With the concept of interaction and the idea of physically making something with your hands, we came up with the idea of a “brick” that was vernacular to the North. Wood became our material of preference. It is lightweight, sustainable to the site (the Northern climate), and creates a feeling of calm play. The base of the system is a modular grid aligning dowels with building blocks. The 6 building block variations allow for people of all ages to interact with the wall as well as to build onto the wall themselves. The base of the wall is fixed and unable to be changed creating a storage space for loose pieces. Visitors are encouraged to build on top of even the highest points of the structure.
